5 Key Factors in starting a Powerful Movement

Published

What key factors do you think would be non-negotiables in starting a movement? What factors would enhance and perpetuate a movement’s influence and growth? I would add, these key’s are also great guidelines for keeping a movement on track.

If we were to strategically plant movements that plant movements, how could this be done? Here is my list and I’m not saying its exhaustive, but it is my guideline. I picked this up from Ben Wong many years ago. www.cellchurch.co.za  Ben has begun a movement in Hong Kong, I have never forgotten this discussion. I offer them to you, for your thinking.

1. Movements move in the power of the Holy Spirit.

There must be the supernatural dynamic led by the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit are regularly being exercised.

2. Movements have their own music and style.

Look at the camp meetings of last century, Wesley, the Salvation Army, and more recently Vineyard, Hillsong, Christian City Church (C3), Willow Creek and Bethel. It seems where there is a move of the Holy Spirit, new songs are birthed.

3. Movements have their own publications and resources.

The above (in No 2) are examples of this, they all have their own resources and publications. Their way of doing things is recorded and taught.

4. Movements have their own training and education.

Values, vision and their non-negotiables are taught and re-taught. Their DNA is caught and taught in classroom settings, conferences, seminars and Bible Schools. These are strategic environments where people are discipled and trained.

5. A Movement effect’s the community in social work.

The Salvation Army is a great example of this, as well as the Methodists, Anglicans and Pentecostal moments.

For me TWO key factors enhance and perpetuate a movement’s GROWTH and INFLUENCE.

1. People must OWN and incarnate the vision and values of the movement.

The aim is people truly own the vision as their vision. Ownership of the vision and values of the movement is an absolute key.

2. Continued mentoring, discipleship and training needs to take place for a movement to expand and grow.

Vision, values and DNA are caught, For these to be caught they must be taught over and over in different ways by various people. The “why” and the “what” are huge factors that need to be addressed again and again. People telling the “story” of the moment, it’s beginnings, it’s learning’s and it’s successes.
